30 Year Review
After much research, I purchased an Omega Speedmaster in 1968 as an 18th birthday present to myself. There were not many chronographs available at that time (Rolex, Breitling, Omega and probably others I no longer remember). To my surprise, that summer (or next), Omega began agressive advertising that it’s watch was the official timepiece of the Apollo Astronauts. It reaffirmed my choice. Thirty years later, it is still the best watch I own (including my Submariner). My only complaint is that I have gone through three or four bracelets/straps. Ironically, a new metal bracelet costs more than the original cost of my Speedmaster ($185). Interestingly, no Rolex owner has ever commented on my Submariner, but fellow Speedmaster owners always start up a conversation with each other. I cannot comment on the new Speedmasters, but mine has been dropped, thrown, drowned, frozen, heated, shaken and abused for 30 years and still runs great. I recommend factory cleaning, vacuum sealing and a new crystal every 10 years or so, just to be safe.

My last watch
When I graduated from college in 1966, my parents gave me a fine very slim gold Swiss watch. It didn’t last a month in the Amazon. The stainless automatic Seiko I bought at the PX in Vietnam was stolen out of my car. Then I bought my last watch, the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

I was half way through law school when I bought it at Al’s Pawn Shop in Nashville in 1974 for about $125, the most I could afford. A year later my wife gave me a tooled silver bracelet watch band for my birthday. It’s the only watch I have worn since.

It has always been amazingly accurate. When it quits because I forgot to wind it, that means I have been too busy and I try to slow down. As a litigator, I use the stop watch function frequently to time my work. When it finally wore out after some 25 years, I sent it to an expert near Seattle I located online and he put it back into like new shape…for five times what I had paid for it.

In 1997 I saw the same watch in a store window in Geneva. I made a note of the price in Swiss francs and later calculated it cost around $3500 in US dollars. That’s when I realized my treasured watch had probably been stolen and fenced at Al’s Pawn Shop all those years before. Until then I had thought I was merely the beneficiary of a man down on his luck who needed money to get home.

To see the exact same watch on the wrist of the space suit at the Huntsville Space Museum and playing a critical role in the movie, Apollo 13, gives me a funny sense of pride at my uncanny good luck to have a watch I will never replace at such a low price. On a subconscious level I hope the satisfaction the watch has given me for these past 30+ years is somehow sensed by the owner from whom it was stolen and he is pleased. Especially since he had it adequately insured.

Since 1983…
Bought in 1983 for about 800 bucks. It’s a little heavy, but it is so beautiful. I wear it 5 - 10 times / month. One new crystal needed in 1998. No work on the mechanical movement, ever.

Worn by Michael Schumacher and Michael Crichton, to name a few.

An old Swiss friend told me (back in 1983) that you look at your watch 30 - 100 times a day–why not have a beauty (he had a Patek Phillipe).

Consider it a 20 year investment.

Fantastic Watch.
I purchased the 2255.80 directly from Amazon, not through a 3rd party. The watch is widely reviewed all over the net and is a masterpiece, so I’ll comment only on the specific characteristic of purchasing directly from Amazon, something I debated at length (again, not through a third party, I bought directly from Amazon):

In a nutshell, the watch comes exactly as it would from an authorized dealer (AD) but does not come with the warranty card you’d get from an AD which allows the watch to be serviced by Omega should anything go wrong. Instead, you’d ship back to Amazon. I figured the probability of something going wrong with the watch within the first two years was incredibly low anyway, so it made sense to purchase from Amazon, where the savings was an order of magnitude greater than most ADs. The piece itself was flawless with all correct serial numbers and red dot intact on the caseback.

In the future I would again purchase a fine time piece from Amazon because the savings is incredible and the watch itself comes exactly as it would from any other AD source, just with different warranty characteristics you’re unlikely to have to use anyway.

Beautiful watch, but the box was dirty inside … not nice
I purchased this watch new and directly from Amazon thinking that it would guarantee the best quality. Well, the watch was in excellent condition but the white felt inside was dirty. A real shame for such an expensive item.

What you would expect.
Its an omega. The watch is made by one of the oldest manufacterers in Switzerland. I got what I expected. The watch is flawless.

Quality
I found this to be the perfect Omega for me. The appearance is striking. The blue wave dial is almost “electric”, but it is not overpowering. I like the stainless bezel over those that match the dial color. It adds a more professional feel, but is still great to wear with jeans. Same goes for the fact the rotating bezel is “scalloped” and not “coin edge.” The luminescent markers stand up to their reputation. It is not too heavy and sits very comfortably on the wrist.

I also like the fact this model has a 41.3 mm case. It is not too small. Likewise, it doesn’t look like you are wearing a satellite dish on your wrist as is the case with the 50 mm + dials.

I chose quartz over auto (2255.80)for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the hassle of having the movement serviced more frequently. I chose this model over the more popular “Bond” models because it is more unique, and I sought a look that you don’t see everyday.

I would highly recommend having the bracelet sized professionally. I did mine myself, and found it extremely difficult due to the design of the band, despite the fact I had all the tools I thought were sufficient. These link pins do not pop in and out like they do on lesser quality bands.

It is hard to go wrong with Omega. They are attractive, durable and maintain their value over time.

Excellent Omega, nearly perfect!
I purchased this Omega only after lusting after a Seamaster for 10 years- I researched this model as well as the james bond (didnt like the 007 wavy background) and also the 2264 which is awesome but I decided the blue was classy and also a little more fun than black- I bought from Amazon as they give a 5 year warranty- also comes with the serial numbers (note:does not come with the cards) the watch is perfect sized, listed at 41, looks like 43mm when all is said and done- classy and sporty, plus the heritage is great, light weight but masculine- has a great finish and glare proofing on the crystal make it well worth the price- high re-sale value as well make it a good investment you can wear daily! I wish it had a sweeping second hand but it is quartz and it makes sense to “tick” all and all beautiful and with the overnight shipping for 15 bucks you get it quick and easy- I suggest this watch for those who are smart enough to spend on a quality timepiece but who cannot afford the chronotimer which is a definite 5!!! enjoy

Birthday watch
This watch was a birthday present a year ago. I wanted to wait to write the review to see if I still felt the same way I did when it was new. I love this watch. Classic styling with great look and feel. The band was too large when I got it. I took it to the local jewler and he had no problem removing links, but DID say to hold on to each one as they were about $100 per link to replace if needed. I love the TAG. It dresses up or down as needed and fits in with any company. I’m a convert.

I gave this watch as a Christmas present and it is beautiful! You can dress it up or down and he was very surprised at how nice it is in person. For the price, it’s well worth it! My only drawback is getting links removed. I’m hoping any jeweler will do it…
